Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing Equine pathway (apprenticeship)
For 11 years, we have successfully taught the equine and small animal combined course, but we are now proud to offer the above course as a stand-alone qualification. With our dedicated and highly experienced equine teaching team, we are committed to continuing our 100% pass rate.
The course can be delivered as an apprenticeship to enable funding for nearly all students. Full funding may be available subject to previous qualifications and location.
The course, which lasts for 2yrs and 2 terms, will run from September each year and can be taken by 2 routes:
- Day release alongside blended learning and employment in your training practice
- Remote learning with contact days for those that cannot commute easily.
Course Length: Up to 36 months
The Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Equine) is a Level 3 qualification designed to prepare and support those who wish to pursue a career as an equine veterinary nurse.
The key purposes of the qualification are:
To give students the ability to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to practice veterinary nursing, safely and competently.
To allow students to grow as individuals and give them the chance to learn life skills essential for professional development.
Designed to support employers and meet industry needs.
The programme comprises a balance of practice-based learning and theoretical teaching to enable learners to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to practise veterinary nursing safely and competently.
Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing – Small Animal pathway (apprenticeship)
Veterinary nursing is the supportive care of animals receiving treatment within a veterinary practice. A veterinary nurse works as a member of the veterinary team, providing expert nursing care for sick animals.
Veterinary nurses also play a significant role in educating owners on maintaining the health of their pets. They carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures, under veterinary direction.

Course Length: Up to 27 months

Level 2 Apprenticeship in Animal Care & Welfare, Veterinary Care Assistant Route
This new, accessible Level 2 qualification is designed for students currently employed in a veterinary practice.
Today’s fast paced Veterinary industry requires knowledgeable support staff to assist the veterinary surgeons and compliment the veterinary nurses role in all areas of the practice.
This stand alone qualification delivers a wealth of knowledge to really allow support staff to get the most from their role in practice, as well as providing a huge stepping stone to those wanting to progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.
Full funding may be available subject to previous qualifications and location.
Course Length: 15 months
Apprenticeship Routes: Veterinary Care Assistant /Interaction & Handling
This qualification is designed for those interested in developing a career in animal care or veterinary nursing, based within a veterinary practice. Full funding may be available subject to previous qualifications.
Bottle Green Training offers this award via the apprenticeship route, and therefore It is a requirement of the course that apprentices attend lessons, every 4-6 weeks (depending on timetable). Most of the learning and development will be at the employer’s veterinary practice. Progress will be regularly assessed, and progress reviews will confirm the whole breadth of your development.
Units will be internally assessed, internally and externally moderated via a learner’s portfolio and other related evidence, against unit outcomes and assessment criteria. The assessment of some knowledge and understanding will take place at college, however it will link directly to workplace performance and include performance evidence.
A portfolio of evidence will be completed during the course that shows achievement of all the required learning outcomes and assessment criteria. All practical assessment activities must be supervised appropriately.
Level 2 Animal Nursing Assistant – Equine
This new, accessible Level 2 qualification is designed for students currently employed with an equine practice.

This 15-18 month course, is designed for those interested in developing a career in animal care or veterinary nursing, all units will be taught in the context of equines (horses, ponies & donkeys). Bottle Green Training offers this award via the apprenticeship route, and will be delivered remotely with additional support throughout. Most of the learning and development will be at the employer’s veterinary practice. Progress will be regularly assessed, and progress reviews will confirm the whole breadth of your development.
Level 1 & 2 Functional Skills – Maths / English
Originally offered as part of the Level 2 VCA award, we are now able to extend our provision of Functional Skills to anyone wishing to achieve this award whether part of the Level 3 Entry requirements or upskilling their current literacy and numeracy levels. There is no obligation to enrol on any other awards offered by BGT Ltd.
Functional Skills Level 2, is a GCSE equivalent and key for entry onto any Level 3 apprenticeship.
Funded route: full funding can be drawn down for those currently on the Level 2 Animal Care & Welfare apprenticeship.
Private: for those wishing to achieve the FS qualification as a standalone award/s. £625+VAT per subject.
Level 3 Diploma – Equine Top Up Award (non funded)
Offered via remote delivery, this 18-month course will allow small animal RVN’s to add to their existing extensive knowledge and value to the profession by becoming equine RVNs. Applicants will take part in weekly college lectures delivered via Zoom, an online skills log and sit theory and practical examinations to achieve this award. This style of delivery allows learners to attend from anywhere in the UK.
Applicants must be Small Animal Registered Veterinary nurses and be employed at a registered training practice.
