1. What are the organizational requirements to ensure security of the workplace and how does this directly link to Health and Safety?

2. What are your roles and responsibilities for Health and Safety in the workplace and why is it important not to go beyond your own capabilities?

3. What are the relevant organizational policies and legislation regarding Health and Safety in the workplace?

4. What measures does your workplace have for reporting inadequacies and faults and why is it important that these are rectified?

5. What types of emergencies can occur in the workplace and how can your location in the building during such emergencies affect the procedure you take?

6. List the different types of fire extinguishers and their common use.

7. List the different types of waste generated in Practice and the correct method for their disposal. Include the disposal of liquids and what you may put down the sink.

8. How would you lift, transport and store large/heavy items?

9. What risks may be faced specifically to any children that come into your workplace and how can you avoid them?

2. Why is it important that colleagues work together and support and changes in working practice?

3. What is the initial method for dealing with disagreements in your workplace and what protocol should be followed if disputes are not resolved locally? Think about how your level of responsibility fits into this area.

4. List some of the important methods used to ensure colleagues work together and communicate effectively.

5. Why is effective communication between colleagues so important?

1. Write down the information you should ask for when making appointments and receiving clients for appointments. Why is it important to make sure this information is up to date and correct?

2. What considerations should be given to safe handling and transportation when bringing different types of animals into the surgery?

3. List some of the conditions that should be treated as emergencies and given priority appointments? Include any information you could give to the owner to assist in safe transportation.

4. What is your Practice protocol for referring and receiving second opinion clients?

5. How can you make sure all communication with clients is effective and professional and when might additional support be needed?

6. Why is it important to maintain a clean and tidy waiting area?

7. What information should be available to clients in the reception area and how can you use the waiting time to provide information on services available?

8. Write down the Health and Safety regulations which are relevant to your work on the reception desk and the public waiting area. What are the key points and principles of these regulations?

What is the cost of a first consultation and a conscious cat dematt inclusive and exclusive of VAT?

3. What payment methods are available at your Practice and are there any additional costs involved in using them? (Think about any payment plan fees if applicable)

4. What information should be included on all receipts given to clients?

5. How would you deal with any difficulties in processing payments? Think about technical errors and clients unable to pay – what is your level of responsibility here?

1. Why is it important to read and understand the consent form and case records and confirm all details are correct both before and during the admission consultation?

2. Why must all consent forms be signed and what is meant by "informed consent"?

3. What are the main points of procedure for admitting animals and for maintaining contact with owners during the hospital stay?

4. State the Health and Safety policies that are relevant to the correct handling and restraint of animals. What important points regarding general safety for yourself and the animals should you always remember and follow?

1. State why is it so important to keep examination rooms clean and write down the procedures you use in Practice to ensure this cleanliness.

2. What different types of waste may be generated in the examination rooms and how should each type be disposed of?

3. Think about how your examination rooms are laid out – the furniture, storage units, equipment and materials. What is good about the layout and what could be improved?

4. How would you identify damage or faults in the examination room and who would you report any finding to?

5. Which areas of your Practice are out of bounds for members of the public, how are these areas marked and what level of security is needed to ensure compliance?

1. Write all the authorized suppliers you use for different veterinary materials. Why is it important to use them?

2. Why is it important to regularly check the condition of and use a stock rotation method for all Veterinary materials?

3. State the legislation and Acts which should be followed with regard to the ordering and storage of Veterinary materials and medication. What are the key points within these Acts?

4. What different storage methods do you use in Practice for different materials and medications and why is it important to maintain these conditions and appropriate stock levels?

5. Who has access to the supply records of ordered and delivered items and why is it important that these are checked and accurate?

1. State why it is important to ask for guidance from qualified Veterinary staff. Where else can you access information before preparing for medical procedures and investigations?

2. List the equipment and materials you regularly use in Practice for medical procedures and investigations and state which conditions they may used for.

3. How best would you prepare the clinical environment, equipment and materials before beginning medical procedures and investigations? Include the environmental conditions, infection control procedures and disposal of waste.

4. Describe how you would deal with any problems when they occur, including faults and supply problems with materials. Who is the appropriate person to inform when problems arise?

5. What are the relevant key points of the following Health and Safety regulations -

  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • COSHH
  • PAT testing
  • Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005

1. What patient information is required before beginning any medical procedure or investigation?

2. How would you position the following, include any extra measures you would take to keep the animal and staff safe.

  • Place a urinary catheter in a sedated 20kg Border Collie.
  • Taking a jugular blood sample from a nervous 17yr old cat.
  • Placing a catheter in the cephalic vein of a feisty 6kg Westie.
  • A frightened rabbit with myiasis to clip and clean.

3. Potential problems may arise when restraining the animals above, what indications should you be looking out for and what problems could they lead to?

4. Why is it important to prepare the animal quickly and competently for any procedure?

1. Why is it important to confirm the animal's condition and required nursing care with qualified Veterinary staff?

2. What extra considerations do you need to think about when nursing -

  • Infectious/contagious diseases.
  • Zoonotic conditions.

3. In the following scenarios list the equipment, materials and monitoring methods you would use. Also include what types of problems may occur and what indicators you should be looking out for.

  • A 3kg cat arrives at the surgery following an RTA. Radiographs show a closed fracture to the L femur, and he is showing signs of shock. The plan is to place the cat on i/v fluids, apply a support bandage to the leg and hospitalized for the night for observation with a view to surgically repair the fracture the next day.
  • An anorexic 25kg Golden Retriever. The vet in charge of the case has hospitalized the dog and would like you to begin assisted feeding.
  • A 2kg rabbit has been brought from the surgical theatre after an overiectomy. It has received O2 therapy on recovery and is now starting to move around. Its body temperature is reading 35oc.

4. Why is it important to report any problems or change in condition to the Veterinary Surgeon?

2. Why is it important to report any emergency situation to the Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible?

3. Why is it important that you quickly and correctly ascertain the condition of a patient in an emergency situation?

1. Using your own Practice layout and available materials how would you choose and prepare accommodation for the following? Think about bedding, environmental conditions, stress levels, food and water needs including the use of suitable containers.

  • A 10yr old German Shepherd, weak on hind limbs with mega-oesophagus.
  • A nervous 3yr old rabbit with gut stasis.
  • A 5yr old cat with cat flu.
  • A 1yr old ferret for routine castration.

2. What security risks could be associated with patient accommodation and how would you reduce these risks? Include who has authorized access to the accommodation and how you monitor this.

2. What other parameters may be monitored and recorded and name a conditions where it may be of particular importance.

  • A 4kg rabbit hospitalized with gut stasis.
  • A 3kg cat hospitalized with renal failure.

4. Why is it important to bring any problems to the attention of the Veterinary Surgeon?

5. What information do clients need to know when their pet is in the hospital and what is the protocol for visiting patients in your Practice?

1. What is your standard protocol for cleaning patient accommodation, bedding and food bowls post use? Include disinfectant used and dilution rates.

2. What changes are made to the above when dealing with accommodation of patients with contagious diseases?

3. How often should the following be replaced/cleaned in occupied accommodation?

  • Bedding
  • Food/water bowls
  • Fresh fruit & veg for exotics
  • Hay/shredded paper bedding for exotics

4. What type of damage can occur to the accommodation and who should this be reported to?

5. List the different types of waste materials generated from cleaning accommodation and where should each one be disposed?
